You might have read either Riello’s or my own report on the recent Blackout a couple of months back in South America, and the fact that the chances of it happening here in the UK are rising each year. Well on Friday, the nightmare became a reality for millions of people.

Elon Musk of Tesla Motors just announced the Powerwall, a lithium-ion based battery pack that can be used to store and provide a source of battery back-up. The Powerwall is available in two variants: one for domestic use rated at 10kW and 7kW and a Grid sized version for industrially sized applications.

When uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) were developed for the oil and emerging computer industries in the 1950s their primary purpose was to provide both ‘uninterruptible power’ and condition the power which could be mains derived or supplied by a local generating set. Early computer power supplies where less reliable than they are today, with smaller input voltage and frequency windows and were very susceptible to power pollution: sags, surges, brownouts, spikes, transients and electrical noise.

Energy storage solutions for naturally derived power have been important to the advancement of the usability of environmentally friendly energy as the world searches for ways to reduce dependence of non renewable energy sources.

Around this time of year reporters and politicians latch on to the ever-weakening state of the UK electricity grid. Traditional coal and gas-fired power stations are being decommissioned faster than new nuclear plants can be commissioned, to meet carbon reduction commitments or because they are past their economic life. Reserve capacity is at its lowest for ten years and the UK may well be facing one of the most severe winters for 50 years placing extra demand on the grid. At the same time, the funding that helped fuel the solar PV and wind turbine revolution is to be culled.

Within a datacentre environment, any break in electrical power, whether momentary or a complete mains power supply failure can be a disaster. The consequences being downtime, system crashes and service loss. For some datacentres, especially those providing colocation services, any break in the critical power supply can lead to service level agreement penalties and potentials claims on professional indemnity insurance.
