Datacentre UPS Systems
Datacentre UPS systems can be either on-line (VFI) transformer or transformerless-based. Transformerless datacentre UPS offer a more compact footprint and higher operating efficiency and tend to run up to around 200kVA which can be extended through parallel operation up to typically eight units in an N+x configuration. Transformer-based uninterruptible power supplies run from 10-800kVA and again parallel operation can extend this to 6MVA. Transformer-based UPS are more robust and suited to installations where there is a high degree of electrical pollution. The UPS provide Galvanic isolation which is a separation of the incoming and output supplies to provide a more power conditioned than can be achieved with a transformerless UPS, which will provide a similarly clean output using EMI/RFI filters.
Datacentre UPS can be installed within a datacentre, especially transformerless UPS which have operate at a high switching level leading to lower audible noise output. Transformer-based UPS tend to be installed in a separate UPS and battery room or plant room. Containerised UPS systems are also available package with a DC flywheel and generator or fuel cell system. Runtimes can be extended using matching battery cabinets, cladded or uncladded battery racks or connection to a local or ECO Power supplied generating set.
Please note: Riello UPS MSM have a single phase output from either a three phase input or single phase input. All the other UPS on this page have a three phase input and output. The Eaton 93PM is a modular UPS system.

Types of Data Centre Uninterruptible Power Supplies
UPS for datacentre applications can be either static on-line transformer or transformerless-based. Transformerless UPS offer a more compact footprint and higher operating efficiency and tend to run up to around 200kVA which can be extended through parallel operation up to typically eight units in an N+x configuration. Transformer-based uninterruptible power supplies run from 10-800kVA and again parallel operation can extend this to 6MVA. Transformer-based UPS are more robust and suited to installations where there is a high degree of electrical pollution. The UPS provide Galvanic isolation which is a separation of the incoming and output supplies to provide a more power conditioned than can be achieved with a transformerless UPS, which will provide a similarly clean output using EMI/RFI filters.
Datacentre UPS generally offer a range of operating modes including On-line (VFI), ECO (VI) and standby. On-line VFI mode provides Voltage and Frequency Independence (VFI) in that the UPS load is always connected to the inverter, which is constantly running. The load is only ever connected to the mains supply (typically through the built-in EMI/RFI filters) during maintenance or built-in static switch transfer on overload or system failure. High efficiency On-line VFI UPS can typically achieve 95-96% in full on load mode. Legacy traditional systems can only achieve around 92% or less leading to an option to upgrade to a new energy efficient ECO UPS, paid for through energy savings.
In ECO Mode, Voltage Independence (VI) means that the uninterruptible power supply is operating as a line interactive UPS. The Inverter is active but does not power the load which is supplied a voltage that tracks that of the mains power supply. When the mains power supply fails or falls out of tolerance, the UPS inverter picks up the load. Operating in ECO-mode allows static on-line UPS to achieve operating efficiencies of up to 99%.
Standby is suitable for emergency lighting operations where the load is connected to the mains supply through the built-in static switch. The UPS is powered with the inverter ready to activate and take up the load on mains failure.
