Eco Mode UPS can achieve deliver higher operating efficiencies (up to 99%) and energy savings than the On-line (VFS-SS-111) mode typically used for critical datacentre type loads.

When a UPS is set to run in Eco Mode, the operation mimics that of a Line Interactive UPS. In line interactive operation the inverter only powers the load when the mains power supply fluctuates outside preset tolerances. When a stable source of AC power is present (either the mains power supply or a generator), the UPS inverter is powered down and connects the load to an internally filtered and stabilised supply. The power quality of the UPS in terms of protection from mains borne spikes and electrical noise, sags, surges and brownouts will depend on the UPS design: transformerless or transformer-based.

Smart Mode is an alternative operation which can also provide energy savings but provide superior protection to the load than Line Interactive operation. In Smart Mode, the UPS decides whether to operate in On-line or Line Interactive mode based on the state and stability of the AC power supply. Standby Mode is also available with some UPS designs. In Standby mode the inverter reactivation time can be longer than line interactive operation and therefore this mode is recommended only for security systems, emergency lighting and less critical loads.

On-line Double Conversion Mode

On-line double-conversion UPS run their inverter section constantly to power the load. The output waveform is digitally generated and the UPS can either be transformerless or transformer-based. This type of UPS is classified as Voltage and Frequency Independent (VFI) under EN 62040-3. This mode of operation is always recommended for critical power loads such as IT, telecoms and datacentres as it provides the best form of power protection, output security and electrical supply.
