Renewable Batteries Characteristics
Batteries used to store power in renewable applications require different characteristics to those used within standby power applications – Uninterruptible Power Supplies and DC Power Systems.
Solar batteries and batteries used in wind turbine installations principally have to be capable of high cyclic usage and have a long operating life. This is because they may be called on frequently to discharge their power when the mains power fails or at night to allow a site to run ‘Off-The-Grid’.
In terms of life time, a typical Solar PV panel has a 10 year warranty with many installations forecast to last twenty or more years. As an investment the batteries used in photovoltaic installations must have a long-life to preserve the financial model return. They also require low maintenance and off course should be fully recyclable. Feed-in-Tariffs
