Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This is a general list arranged by topic covering general questions and comments we get about our products and services. We would also recommend reviewing our Guides and Downloads section to see if the information you require is there or contact us.
Batteries
What is the typical recharge time for battery packs used with UPS systems?
We generally try to achieve an 80% recharge time within 24 hours. The batteries will be charged by the charger built-into the UPS and through its connection to the AC mains power supply. If there is a battery extension pack connected to the UPS and it has its own built-in charger, this will require its own AC mains power supply connection.
When do you use a battery transition box?
We normally recommend a battery transition box when more then 3 battery boxes have to be connected to a single UPS via a terminal hardwired connection. For more information see our range of Battery Transition Boxes. Fused battery transition boxes are required for an installation to comply with the IEE 17th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671).
Floor Loadings
Floor loadings are measured in KN/m². For computer room Raised Access Floors and/or non-ground floor basement areas it is important to check the floor loading for larger single and three phase UPS systems with a large battery cabinet. A three-phase 100kVA UPS with a 5m battery can have a combined weight of 1200Kg or 1.2tonnes. Spreader plates can be used to reduce point loadings and if necessary floors can be reinforced with additional central pedestals and supports. The total loading should be verified by a structural engineer if there are any doubts.
Generators
What would suggest as a sizing factor for a Generator and UPS installation?
For most installations, using the latest UPS technologies with a high input power factor and low input THDi, we would recommend at least 1.25:1 (generator:UPS). It is possible to ‘psuedo’ match a UPS 1:1 but only if the UPS is downrated; normally a firmware change, and the battery is sized accordingly. Older UPS with a poor input waveform will need from 1.5 to 2:1 as a sizing factor. It can also be important to known the age of the generator and specifically the characteristics of the alternator/governor arrangement.
How much fuel will a typical generator hold?
Generators are typically installed with 8-hour, 24-hour (day tank) or 48-hour tanks and are sized in kVA/kW with Primary and Standby Power ratings. A generator engine will have load related litres-per-hour consumption value and the tank an overall capacity value. These values can be found on a specific generator’s datasheet.
Rack Cabinets
What is the weight loading of a typical server cabinet?
Most server rack cabinets can take up 150-300Kg of internal weight. It will depend on whether the cabinet is a light or heavy-use type. Please check to ensure that your cabinet can take the weight of your UPS and battery if you are considering both a rack mount UPS and extended battery runtime trays. If there is not sufficient weight (or ‘U’ capacity) consider a floor standing battery. Also ensure that the cabinet is deep enough to accommodate the depth of the UPS and battery trays.
Software
How is my UPS management and monitoring software delivered?
UPS software for monitoring and management control is either supplied with our UPS systems on a CD-ROM or is available from a download link that is supplied when a product is ordered.
