UPS System IP Case Ratings
IP is a numeric system for describing the Ingress Protection provided by a case around a piece of electronic equipment from both solid objects and liquids. The system was established by the International Electro Technical Commission, under EN60529. The larger the value of each digit, the great the degree of protection provided.
In general, UPS systems have an IP rating of 20 (IP20) but occasionally we are asked for higher IP ratings and most commonly IP54. Typically IP20 is suitable for office environments, comms rooms and data centre environments. IP54 is more suited to industrial and more extreme environments where there may be wider temperature ranges, moist/wet conditions, dirt, dust and other environmental factors that the UPS system must be protected from in order to deliver a guaranteed performance.
It may not always be possible to uplift an IP-rating for a UPS system due to airflow, dust filter and heat considerations. In this case, we can quote for a specially manufactured or modified enclosure for the UPS system. Larger containers can house both the UPS system and a standby generator, air conditioning, lighting, solar PV array and associated LV switchgear.
